Hei Parau Motueka Pounamu

$150.00

Hei Parau, Flower Pounamu collected in the Motueka area.

Pendants like this were worn by the Waitaha / Kati Mamoe peoples in the Motueka Valley and Tasman Bay before the arrival of Ngati Tumatakokiri in the 1600's. Local stone was used as a substitute for the Mother of Pearl which was used in Hawaiki. I have chosen to use the Rarotongan / Cook Islands Maori word for pearl shell, Parau, rather than breastplate.

Size is approxinately 3.5cm - 4.5cm. Adjustable pull cord binding. By Emry Kereru.
