Tai Tokerau style Marakihau Taniwha with kirikiore unaunahi, carved from dark Southwestland Kawakawa Pounamu from Ka Umu o Hapopo.
The ninth taonga of Puhi-taniwha-rau honouring our purakau. This piece is slightly drconstructed towards a kupenga form inspired by the hundreds of tuna tangled in the awa and moana on their way back to Hawaiki.
Strung as a side hanging breastplate, the taonga is much bigger and heavier than the others and is about 14cm by 7cm approx, with an adjustable sliding braid.
