Hei Tiki, also known in Southern mita as Fakapakoko. Inaka pounamu with Parau uri / Black Pearl shell konohi.
The Hei Tiki is a creation of Southern Maori culture, attributed in Purakau to the carving atua, the taniwha Tuterakihuanoa. Originally it's use was restricted by tapu to the wahine who were carriers of rangatira whakapapa lines, being passed down to the tamariki through the generations, it's significance is contained in the kete wananga no Hine-te-iwaiwa o te Whare Pora. The Hei Tiki became prominent and spread into the North Island through the Kaiapoi pounamu trade in the late Puawaitanga period of Maori culture, it's use becoming general around the 1700's.
