Hei Toki from Kawakawa collected on a hikoi with Ngati Waewae at Arahura.
The Toki Pounamu is a revered and prized tool from Te Ao Kohatu used for the felling and shaping of trees into waka, whare and whakairo. In Southern Purakau it is associated with the Atua Whakairo, Tuterakihuanoa, who carved Te Waipounamu / the South Island. In the korero of the northern tribes it is tied into their hono tatai through explorers like Kupe, Ngahue and Tamatea.
