Kawakawa Pounamu, Ka Umu o Hapopo
Pekapeka is an archaic kupu refering to the doubled or twin form of this Manaia, which is an adaption of the Pare or lintel carving of the whare whakairo to the medium of Pounamu. These Manaia are thus the guardians of the threshold. In my whakaaro these two Manaia which accompany Hina, the wife of Maui or Hinenuitepo on the pare represent her twin sons Tawera raua ko Meremere, who are atua embodying the star Venus as the morning and evening star, a very important star in our traditions. These Manaia are thus also a wayfinding star.
