Niho Parau

$600.00

Niho Parau (Mother of Pearl)

Front face depicts Takaroa with Unaunahi repesenting the crescent face of Hinamarama. Reverse is a Rei Puta with Puwerewere representing the rays of Tamanui te Ra.

The first Pounamu carvings were copies of Polynesian whale tooth and pearl shell pendants carved in Serpentine. This piece explores the significance the Parau / Pearl Shell might have had by drawing on drawing on creation myths from the Pacific about Tangaroa and Vatea which share a common source with our own Wanaka and korero.

Length is approximately 8cm. Adjustable pull cord binding. Carved by Emry Kereru.
